Tuff's Story lightpurple.gif (3106 bytes)

Here is his sad story.

Early in the Spring, our neighbors had someone late at night come into
their pasture and chase their horses with a truck. They actually hit poor
little Tuff with the truck and knocked him down into a ravine where
he tumbled into a barb wire fence.

(This is all assumed, since there were no witnesses, but there were
tire tracks all through the field and a set of tracks leading right up to the
fence Tuff was dangling from)

In the morning when the rest of the mares and colts came up,
one colt was missing.

They went to look for him and found him hanging upside down
by his hind fetlocks in the barb wire fence. Tuff had cuts all over his body,
both of his hind legs were cut clear to the bone and just barley hanging on.
It looked as if someone had taken a saw and
proceeded to cut this poor colts legs off.

Here are some pictures of Tuff the
first day he got here.
We will update this site weekly with
new pictures and his progress.
Please keep in mind these pictures
were taken in December, the accident was this May!!

Tuff has come to live with us on 12/11/02 He is still in pretty bad shape,
he is very thin, severely suffering from infections, and has a poor appetite.

When he walks on the "bad" left, hind leg, it looks as if he is trying to
walk up stairs.  He has no bend in that leg at all. We are unsure if that
problem is because the tendon was severed or because it is still so swollen
and painful.

I would like to have a vet x-ray both hinds, from the hocks down.
So that we really know
what we are dealing with. It is hard coming into
an injury this late without having a clear view of what is going on.
Despite Tuff suffering through all of the pain from the injuries and pain
from the doctoring, he still possesses a wonderful disposition. He can't
wait to see you in the morning and whinnies every time you come in the
barn. He stands very still and allows us to soak both hind legs, apply
medication and wrap (which can be
done by one person, not something
that you can usually get away with on a young colt!)
He is bright eyed and at times even tries to pull on his halter and lead
to "take you where he wants to go".

Most people are thinking put this poor colt down. In all honesty if he was mine in the beginning I may have. But he has come so far now it would be a shame to give up on him!

He has proven he has the "fight" in him to pull through this. Not only to recover but to also keep a wonderful disposition through it all, says an awful lot about the disposition and heart this colt has.

The neighbors little girl named him Tuff, we think
it suits him to a T!
